Basic Search Engine Optimization
Posted by Ishmael Sanchez on Sep 16, 2009
Search engine optimization (SEO) is important for all websites. I don't care how big or small your site is you need to let people find you. Increasing your visibility on search engines doesn't necessarily require hiring a SEO expert. The tips listed below are some best practices for increasing organic traffic.
- Pick a version of the site www or without (301 Redirect)
- Add keywords and meta description to pages
- Customize Page titles (Items to the left should be of higher importance)
- Use clean URL's, no query string parameters
- Use keyword rich URL's
- Have good HTML structure and use CSS (No tables)
- Edit robots.txt - Reduce/configure what is indexed
- Extend domain name purchase for additional five years (Most spam domains usually only register for a year at a time)
- Install some analytic software, my preference is Google Analytics
- Apply for a Google Webmaster tools account
- Configure and submit a sitemap to the major search engines
